Hemp seeds can be bought as they are or shelled to leave the heart, both have different benefits of equal importance. With shells, hemp seeds are a fabulous source of insoluble fiber. They look a bit like sesame seeds but have a nuttier flavor which makes them incredibly versatile. Without the shells they are easier to eat and are higher in protein–vital for athletes. Three tablespoons of hemp seeds provides 10 grams of protein. It couldn’t be easier to add to your diet– just add to a delicious shake. Hemp hearts contain GLA which acts as an anti-inflammatory to help your muscles recover quicker after exercise.

They also reduce the likelihood of painful muscle cramping. If you are recovering from a sport-related injury hemp can also speed up the recovery process and get you back to fitness in record time.
Added protein isn’t the only benefit to adding hemp to your diet. Hemp provides vital nutrients which boost your immune system, fewer coughs and colds to interfere with your training. If you are on a vegan or vegetarian diet it can be very difficult to get all those vital nutrients and protein to boost your performance, hemp will be your new favorite thing!

How to add hemp to your diet

Aside from the protein shakes mentioned earlier, there are loads of other ways to add hemp to your diet every day. Hemp milk, a delicious alternative to almond or other nut milks. You can add this to cereal, smoothies/shakes or just drink as it is straight from the fridge!

Sprinkle the hemp hearts on your cereal, pasta or salad.  Add to pesto and serve with pasta or to coat a piece of fish.  Make a delicious salad dressing. Hemp seed butter is a delicious alternative to peanut butter, great for a high protein healthy snack, add to your toast or use as a dip for apple slices.
